Fall is the Best Season

6 September 2023

If I was forced to choose a season that lasts the entire year, hands down it would be fall. Let me tell you why.

1. Bye-Bye Mosquitoes

We still get some of our best weather in the Fall. But our hot, sunny, fall days are often followed by chilly nights dipping below freezing with the occasional dusting of snow. Mosquitoes don’t bounce back so quickly from the frequent freezes so we get more fun-filled days in the sun, minus the mosquitoes.

2. Smores!

Once we’ve had a bit more rain, we can safely enjoy get-togethers at the lake with potluck barbecues and, the pièce de résistance, s’mores! If you’ve had the real thing, no further explanation is required. This sweet face expressing pure joy says it all.

If you’ve never had campfire S’mores, please add them to your bucket list immediately. The ingredients are incredibly simple so skip the fake s’mores kits.

S’mores Ingredients

  • Graham Crackers
  • Marshmallows
  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar or Squares
  • Campfire

Place whole graham crackers on heated rocks near the campfire where it’s not too hot. Place chocolate squares on the crackers & let melt a bit. Meanwhile, your marshmallow brigade toasts marshmallows on sticks over the open fire. At just the right moment, grab 2 chocolate-covered crackers from the fire, and squish a melted marshmallow between it, pulling it off the stick. Devour. Careful. It might be hot in the middle. Repeat.

3. Photographer’s Delight

Outdoor lighting is a bit like a Little Red Riding Hood situation. Summer’s harsh, bright sun means a choice between squinting subjects or sunglasses disguises. Winter’s shorter days & limited light require lots more tight scheduling & fewer opportunities to get those winning shots. Spring rains?

Fall is the winner with its natural, bright, multi-coloured decorations. Cooler temperatures mean that you subjects are more comfortable. The natural light enhances any skin tones. All you need are a few decent reflectors & you’re set!

4. Harvest Time! Yay!

It can be a super busy time, especially if you’ve had a great growing season. You’ve been patient, maybe sneaking a garden treat now and then. But the fall season means that it’s time to finally reward yourself with delicious dishes like borsch made with beets & beans, fresh from the garden.

Jasper’s bartering community is amazing. We’re great at sharing our bounty, even trading our canned preserves. Sometimes it feels like Christmas.

5. More Energy for Play

Dress right & you can play outdoors all day. There’s a reason why the song called Summer lazy days. In the heat of summer, it’s tough to do much before you begin to overheat. Our sun is so intense that we’ve really got to keep an eye on our kids and fur babies or risk heat stroke. Little bodies are especially prone to overheating.

Cooler fall days make for happier, safer outdoor play.

6. Fashion is More Fun

September is the time to break out those cozy sweaters you’ve been hiding away all summer. I’ve got my faves that feel like cuddly, fluffy puppy hugs. It’s like wearing a portable blanket wherever you go.

But that’s not all! September brings the most beautiful colours as the leaves start to fall. It’s like nature’s own fireworks show, but without the loud noises. Wouldn’t you agree that it’s the perfect backdrop for all your outdoor activities like hiking and biking?

7. Cozy into Better Sleeps

Cool September nights really are a breath of fresh air. Rains have washed away the dust lingering in the air. We naturally reach for soft, cozy sweaters & wraps and, in covering ourselves, it’s like we give ourselves a hug. Things slow down and we all feel just a bit calmer.

No more sweating through your sheets or sticking to your clothes. It’s the perfect weather for a cozy night in, snuggled up with your chai tea and a good book.

8. Pumpkin Spice? Yes Please

Don’t hate me but I’m one of those people that looks forward to all things pumpkin spice.

But, if that’s not your thing, fall is still the best time for fancy coffee dates. As we’re slowing down from summer’s hectic pace, we settle into routines. Holidays are mostly over so friends are back in town. It’s the perfect time to reconnect in one of Jasper’s many great coffee shops & catch up.

We also love to take our kids out one-on-one for coffee dates (aka hot chocolate) & catch up. Or, have an at-home date. Try this amazing recipe for pumpkin spice pumpkin pie smoothie.

9. Halloween

We just love Halloween. It’s become kind of a family thing to challenge ourselves to build on a different theme each year. I’m not sure if it was a subconscious feeling that life had become a bit of a circus after we had grown our family by one, but we really had fun with our circus Halloween.

Stay tuned for this year’s scary surprise theme 😉

10. September is Love

Is it any wonder, with all of that coziness and love of all things Fall that we chose to be married in Jasper in the Fall?! And we couldn’t have asked for a better result.

We enjoyed perfect, summer-like weather for our ceremony next to Pyramid Lake. Minus the mosquitoes.

One of our gifts to our wedding guests was homemade preserves from our recent bounty.

Our guests danced the night away in comfortable, cool, fresh mountain air. I really do wonder why more people don’t opt for Fall weddings.

So, let’s make the most of it! Grab your friends and go on that hiking trip you’ve been talking about all summer. Dust off your bike and take a leisurely ride through the park, enjoying the beautiful fall foliage. Or simply go for a walk and embrace the crisp air and the sound of leaves crunching under your feet.

Trust me, you’ll be glad you did. Soon enough, we’ll be complaining about the cold and dreaming of the warm days of September. So, seize the moment, embrace the outdoors, and enjoy every last bit of this beautiful month before winter arrives with its icy grip.
